Workplace situation

A road closure requires the bus route to be changed. The driver receives an operational message and passengers ask how this will affect their journey.

Learning objectives

  • Understand an operational message.
  • Interpret a simple route change.
  • Calculate or estimate a new arrival time.
  • Explain changes clearly.
  • Identify information requiring verification.

Suggested activities

  1. Read a simulated route-change message (fictional example).
  2. Compare the original route with the alternative route.
  3. Estimate the change in travel time. Example: planned arrival 14:25 + 12 minutes = 14:37.
  4. Prepare a short, clear message for passengers and practise saying it aloud.
  5. Discuss how conflicting information should be checked.

Reflection questions

  • How can the driver ensure information is accurate and understandable?
